ROOIBOS ORIGINS

Rooibos is a herbal infusion made from the leaves of the Aspalathus linearis plant, which is native to the mountainous regions of South Africa's Western and Northern Cape provinces. Like Champagne in France, Rooibos holds a protected geographical indication status recognising its origin and authenticity. Unlike traditional green or black teas derived from the Camellia sinensis plant, rooibos is naturally caffeine-free and contains low levels of tannins. It has gained global popularity for its distinctive flavour and notable health benefits.

ROOIBOS RESEARCH

SCIENTIFIC INTEREST IN ROOIBOS

Rooibos (Aspalathus linearis) has been the subject of extensive scientific research, particularly in South Africa, where it is indigenous. Universities, research institutes, and industry bodies have studied rooibos for its unique chemical composition and functional potential, contributing to its growing global recognition.

Unlike many herbal infusions, rooibos contains a distinct profile of polyphenols that are not commonly found in other plants. This has positioned rooibos as an ingredient of interest across wellness, functional beverage, and nutrition-focused product categories.

Scientific research underpins the growing use of rooibos in:

    • Functional and wellness beverages
    • Herbal infusions and blends
    • Rooibos espresso and coffee alternatives
    • Extracts for food, beverage, and cosmetic applications
